How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
