How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Disorders
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It’s vital to maintain regular visits to your GP and to have your PSA or DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
