How To Know If You Have Prostate Problems

Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.

If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes around 10-15 seconds.

Prostate Problems Symptoms

The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.

Medicine for Prostate Problems

There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.

The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
