How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. But that doesn’t make them go away. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
