How to Know if you have prostate problems

Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.

If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.

Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH is the most common prostate condition. It occurs when the prostate grows and interferes with the flow of urine. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.

Medicine for Prostate Disorders

There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.

The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t make them go away. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
