How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask if you experience any pain or burning when you urinate. Also, if you’ve noticed changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. The prostate can cause a more serious symptom, such as not being able urinate. This is a medical crisis.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
