How To Know If You Have Prostate Problems

Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also tell you if you are at risk of developing cancer, or if other medical conditions may require treatment.

If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.

Symptoms of Prostate Problems

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.

Medicine for Prostate Problems

Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.

Surgery for Prostate Disorders

Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.

The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
