How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It’s vital to maintain regular visits to your GP and to have your PSA or DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
