How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
