How to know if you have prostate issues
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask if you experience any pain or burning when you urinate. Also, if you’ve noticed changes in your urine. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. It’s vital to maintain regular visits to your GP and to have your PSA or DRE tests. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true of prostate carcinoma, which can be treated if caught before it progresses.
