How to know if you have prostate issues
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. They can be liquids or pills, or tablets or liquids in a suppository. The liquid is then passed into the bladder through your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
