How to Know If you have Prostate Problems

Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.

If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your prostate, they will want to know all about your symptoms. They will also want to know how long these symptoms have been occurring. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.

Symptoms of Prostate Problems

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found in the lower urinary tract, in the front and back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.

Medicine for Prostate Disorders

There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications may be used in combination or alone, depending upon your doctor’s recommendation.

Surgery for Prostate Problems

Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain any other options that are available, such as having regular check-ups with your GP or with a urologist at the hospital.

The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
