How To Know If You Have Prostate Problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. They will ask you about any pain or burning you have when you urinate, and whether you’ve noticed any changes in your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate, a walnut-sized organ, is located in the lower tract of the urinary system. It can be found on the front or back of penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news about BPH is that it’s not a cancer sign. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests are the best way to detect cancer and other conditions before they get serious. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is true in particular of prostate cancer. If caught early, it is usually treatable.
