How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple PSA blood test can detect an over-inflated prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. A more serious symptom is the inability to urinate, which is a medical issue.
Medicine for Prostate Disorders
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto can be purchased as a herbal extract or in pill form. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. The surgery could be performed by your GP at their office or by an urologist at the hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good thing is that BPH and other prostate problems are not a sign of a cancer. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It’s vital to maintain regular visits to your GP and to have your PSA or DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
