How to Know if you have prostate problems
Men who are older or have a family history should visit their doctor regularly for a screening. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also show if there’s a chance of developing cancer or any other medical issues that require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE), where a gloved and lubricated finger is placed on the prostate from inside your rectum. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 seconds.
Symptoms of Prostate Problems
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Some men with BPH also experience a loss of bowel control, which is known as fecal incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are several different medicines available to help treat prostate problems. They can come in the form or tablets or liquids, which are then put into a suppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
Surgery may be an option if lifestyle changes and medications do not improve your symptoms. This could be done at your GP’s office or by a specialist urologist. Your doctor or specialist nurse will talk to you about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of surgery, so you can decide what is best for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that doesn’t make them go away. It’s vital to maintain regular visits to your GP and to have your PSA or DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. And if the disease is detected early, there are treatments that can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
