How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood-test called PSA can detect a enlarged prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes around 10-15 seconds.
Prostate Problems Symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. It produces semen which is used for the production sperm. The most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which occurs when the prostate enlarges and interferes with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful urination, a weak flow of urine, and hesitancy or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is another symptom that some men with BPH may experience. A more serious symptom of the prostate is not being able to urinate at all, which is a medical emergency.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. You should continue to visit your GP regularly and have your PSA and DRE tested. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
