How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men over 50 and those with a history of prostate cancer in their family should be screened regularly by their doctor. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor believes you have a prostate problem they will want to hear all about your symptoms and how long they’ve been happening. You’ll be asked if there is any burning or pain when you urinate. They may also ask if your urine has changed. A digital rectal (DRE) may be recommended, in which a finger is placed on your prostate with a lubricated glove from inside your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. It’s responsible for producing semen, which is used in the production of sperm. BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the most common problem with the prostate. This occurs when it enlarges to the point that it interferes in urine flow. Other symptoms of BPH include painful urination. A weak flow of urine and hesitancy. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. The prostate can cause a more serious symptom, such as not being able urinate. This is a medical crisis.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
Many different medicines can be used to treat prostate problems. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid is then passed through the penis into your bladder. Saw palmetto is a common medication. It can be purchased in liquid extract or as a herbal supplement. These medications can be taken alone or in combination, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Problems
If lifestyle changes or medicines do not improve symptoms, surgery may be an alternative. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor will explain to you the pros and con of each surgery type so that you can decide which is best for your needs. They will also discuss any other options available, including regular checkups with a urologist or your GP.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These tests can help detect cancer or other serious conditions early. If the disease is detected early on, treatments are available that can save a life. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
