How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men with a family background of prostate cancer and older men should see their doctor to have regular screenings. A simple blood test, called PSA, can detect an enlarged prostrate. It can also indicate whether there is a high risk of cancer or other medical problems which may require treatment.
If your doctor suspects that you have a prostatic problem, he will want to learn about all of your symptoms and the length of time they have been occurring. They will ask if you experience any pain or burning when you urinate. Also, if you’ve noticed changes in your urine. They may recommend that you undergo a digital rectal examination (DRE), which involves placing a lubricated and gloved finger on your prostate from within your rectum. This takes between 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems symptoms
The prostate is a walnut sized gland located in the lower urinary system, both in front and in back of the penis. It is responsible for the production of semen, which in turn is used to make sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms are painful urination or a weak urine stream, as well as hesitancy, or stopping midstream. Fecal incontinence is another symptom of BPH. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Problems
There are many different medicines that can be used to help with prostate problems. These medicines can be taken as pills or tablets, but they can also be liquids put into a supppository. The liquid is passed into your bladder through the penis. Saw palmetto comes in both liquid extract and herbal supplements. These medications can either be taken by themselves or in combination with other medications, according to your doctor.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
If lifestyle changes and medicines don’t improve your symptoms, surgery might be an option. This can be done by your GP or a urologist in a hospital. Your doctor or nurse specialist will explain the pros and cons of different types of surgery to you so you can make an informed decision. They will explain to you any other options such as regular checkups by your GP or a urologist.
The good news is BPH and most other prostate issues are not cancerous. This doesn’t mean that they can be ignored. It’s important to keep up with your regular visits to the GP, as well as having your PSA and DRE tests. These tests can be used to detect cancer or other conditions early on. If the disease is caught early, treatments can save lives. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, which is usually treatable if it’s caught before it becomes advanced.
