How to Know If you have Prostate Problems
Men who are older and those with a family history of prostate cancer should see their doctor for regular screening. A simple blood test called PSA can detect an enlarged prostate. It can also indicate if there is a risk of developing cancer or other medical problems that may need treatment.
If you believe that your doctor has diagnosed you with a prostate condition, they will ask about your symptoms. Tell them how long they have been going on. You will be asked about any pain you feel when you urinate and if you have noticed any changes to your urine. They may recommend a DRE, where a finger with lubricant and gloves is placed inside your rectum on the prostate. This takes about 10-15 seconds.
Prostate problems can be characterized by a variety of symptoms
The prostate is an almond-sized gland that can be found in the lower urethra, at the front and the back of the genital penis. The prostate is responsible for producing the semen that is used to produce sperm. BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the most prevalent prostate problem. This occurs when prostate enlarges, causing it to interfere with urine flow. Other symptoms include painful or difficult urination and a weak urine flow. Some men with BPH experience fecal (or bowel) incontinence. Not being able to urinate is a more severe symptom.
Medicine for Prostate Issues
There are a variety of medicines that can help with prostate issues. These can be pills or tablets, or they can be in the form of liquids that are put into a suppository. The liquid then passes into the bladder via your penis. A common medication is saw palmetto, which can be bought as a herbal supplement in pill form or in a liquid extract. These medications can be used alone or in combination with others, depending on your doctor’s advice.
Surgery for Prostate Issues
Surgery might be an effective option if lifestyle modifications and medicines fail to improve your symptoms. This could be done in your GP’s surgery or by a urologist at a hospital. Your doctor or specialist will discuss the pros and cons of each type surgery so that you can choose what is right for you. They will also explain other options, such as regular check-ups at your GP’s office or with a urologist in the hospital.
The good news is that BPH, and most other prostate problems, aren’t a sign of cancer. But that does not mean they should be ignored. It is important to continue your regular visits with your GP as well as your PSA/DRE tests. These can be the best way of detecting cancer or other conditions before they become serious. Early detection of the disease can save lives. This is especially true for prostate cancer. It is usually treatable when caught before it has advanced.
